From all accounts, it is difficult to determine exactly how, where, and when the American water spaniel was developed. On appearance alone, many experts believe that this breed is a smaller version of the Irish water spaniel. Others think that it was developed from early versions of the Northern, Southern, and Tweed water spaniels. Still other research suggests that the curly-coated retriever and the English water spaniel may have played a part in the American water spaniel. One source claims it was Native Americans who lived around the Great Lakes that created this American breed.
