How can I remove the smell from sisal rope? I made a ramp for my little dog and covered it…?
…with sisal rope….it stinks!
I have tried letting it sit outside……washed it down, sprayed it with air freshener…. it just plain stinks… The ramp really works great… but the smell is really too much…..It’s been over 2 months now, and it smells the same as the first day. Please help.
the odor is not a good sign. If it smells anything like oil… it’s been treated. It’s great that you recognized something wasn’t quite right with it.
f the sisal rope was imported into your country, it could have been fumigated at entry for pests and the smell is that residue, an insecticide…..
Jute is another plant that is manufactured mainly over seas and it has the petroleum oil from the machines that gets into the fibers while it is being made…ONLY jute that is made for food bag products doesn’t contain this type of oil
Can you see WHO brought it into the country? Google them on the Internet and call them…ask what process/where it ORGINALLY came from and What happens when it comes into your country…
That is what I did with mine and called the company who CALL INDIA to find out what was done at the plant…they were told that oil from the machinery gets into the fibers as they make it…ALL machinery that makes hemp, jute, sisal etc has the same stuff to help the machinery work…I found that site about the “other type of Oil” being used because the companies in India didn’t want the oder/taste to get INTO the food from the bags made out of jute, etc…something to think about…
As for NATURAL oil in the plant fibers making the smell, I can’t find ANY info on that…
But to me the smell of insecticide is very strong in some of the jute, hemp, sisal, I have picked up…I also was told by the company that YES, stuff is fumigated in the containers before it is off loaded…
I wouldn’t wash any all natural ropes such as jute or sisal or even hemp. You’re going to end up with a mess. A friend of mine who owns The Parrot Asylum (www.parrotasylum.com) is a bit insane about this stuff and she did more research on this than you even want to know about. All of this stuff is imported and all of it has to be sprayed in order to keep bugs out of it. Some companies are more careful about what they treat their materials with and others are not. All of the stuff that she sells, she has been very specific to make sure that the companies are using treatments that will not be harmful to her birds or she will not sell it. Not all bird companies are this dilligent. I know that she definitely checked out the hemp rope that is sold at Wal-Mart and the absolutely insured her that it was safe. There’s another sisal that I’ve bought for years from Home Depot that I’ve also never had a problem with that is listed as untreated. It does have a small smell to it but it’s nothing like the general oil smell that you get from a lot of treated stuff. Trust me when I say that you will be able to tell that stuff has been treated when you smell it. It will smell like an oil refinery! When in doubt, definitely call and ask the company it comes from or the people who sell it, that’s what Shyra has done and I’ve followed in her foot steps to make absolutely sure that the stuff I use is safe
